The Relation Between Lupus Patients And Intolerance To Alcohol Debunked

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that has the largest impact on the patient’s kidneys. An autoimmune disease is one wherein an Individual’s immune systems begin to target them instead, and works against protecting the body. This is a very dangerous condition with treatments also being difficult to manage. It is a condition that should be taken care of and it should be treated with utmost care.

A common belief is that lupus can make an individual intolerant to alcohol. There are a few patients that claim that this has happened, but there are no scientific studies that back up this claim. No study has successfully tied these two events together.

Another prominent myth associated with Alcohol consumption and Lupus is that alcohol can help with the symptoms of lupus, which again is entirely a myth and has absolutely no scientific backing associated with it.

Alcohol can react with the medication one is taking and make the medication very dangerous. Alcohol is also very damaging to organs such as the Liver which coupled with the disease can also make the condition worse. If possible, abstinence from alcohol may be the safest route when autoimmune diseases are concerned. If drinking is a requirement, then it is best limited to a single drink a day and no more.

Autoimmune diseases can be very painful as it can cause inflammation in joints and other parts of the body. Most Autoimmune patients have been prescribed some or another anti-inflammatory drug and it is scientifically known that these two elements do not interact well. Some medications, if consumed with alcohol can even cause liver scarring which will only increase the burden upon your body and make the disease more prominent.

There is no way of knowing how adverse alcohol and its effects will be once you have begun showing signs of Lupus, and it may even cause more flare-ups of lupus which will lead to more doctor visits.

Lupus and alcohol intolerance is not particularly connected, however, it is largely recommended that alcohol be entirely avoided by individuals who are suffering from this condition.
